<<  Setting up "Leaving MAGA"  >>

WHY IT MATTERS

Those still "inside" MAGA claim that it is not a cult. Of course, the core of MAGA is indeed a cult. How else can one explain the double standards and complet34e dismissal of all rationale in which defence of the indefensible becomes clearly absurd.

Many of those who joined MAGA have been let down by successive governments - republican and democrats - and feel justifiably angry and impotent. Some have been denied an education. Many became apathetic until along came a populist political ideology that claimed to share their righteous anger.

Who else to help people to escape this dangerous cult that those who have been ensnared in it?

Divisive politics serve no-one - and, ultimately, it is our responsibility, as those who see clearly the mental incapacity of those who support hate filled policy, to support those who may ultimately experience remorse. Despite the anger many of us feel towards those who seemingly ignored the nastiness that Trump and the MAGA movement seemingly represent, we must be ready to forgive those who genuinely feel remorse - Of course, that can be far more difficult for some than others - depending on the losses that we have endured as a result of this movement. That said, our ability or inability to do so reflects on no-one else but ourselves.

In "Rich's Story", Rich admirably states, "I was wrong" - which, frankly, is a lesson for each of us as the nation relearns how to disagree with one another respectfully - to be tolerant of all differences.

Our tolerance should not extend to those who remain actively cruel in their actions (or inaction) - but to those who have made mistakes yet now feel remorse we should welcome them into a kinder society.
