WHY IT MATTERS
The least we should expect from our representatives is a willingness to speak truth to power. Trumps claims regarding Ukraine and its president are absurdly wrong. These are not opinions - but facts. Zelensky is democratically elected leader - and more popular today than ever - despite terrible difficulties faced by that Nation.
It is important that we correct silly assertions - particularly that deal with very serious issues.
Regrettably, we have, currently, a situation where politicians are supporting policies and behaviours along loyalist lines as opposed to moral issue by issue lines. And yet it is critical to democracy that individual representatives are unafraid to voice opposition with their own party.
On this, Bacon decided to take a stand that is in opposition to his party's leader.
In this, he also models flexibility which is more important than ever given the number of people who have decided that differences of opinion are intolerable.
Those of us who are unable to to recognise when people with differing opinions do something wrong are part of the problem. Those of us who decide, "I will never vote for[republican | democrat] again..." are failing to recognise that these inflexible partisan responses are what is eroding the effective implementation of democracy.
