WHY IT MATTERS
We are now all aware of the dangers of fake news - now reinforced y the extraordinary power of AI. Back then (as today) we truly needed real journalism to highlight just how effectively nefarious forces are able to distort our thinking - and thereby our democracy. Traditional media is, of course, owned by a few individuals with vested interests that often oppose those of the larger public. But social media is even more dangerous. Because of Carole’s teams extraordinary work, we now know how cutting edge technology is used to fool vast swathes of us into projecting our valid disillusionment onto the wrong people. Yes - our neighbours can be annoying. Yes, an immigrant may have been given a job that I wanted. But this travesty has been weaponised against us all. As a result, people like Mark Zuckerberg were given far greater scrutiny - quite appropriately - scrutiny that has brought to the publics attention the real problems (to democracy) behind massive inequality. This story is not yet over.
