WHY IT MATTERS
That politicians lie has become normalised by Donald Trump. It is not possible to make informed judgments about policy - and how affects our lives when there can be no trust in the veracity of statements. This is, of course, hugely problematic.
Trump has surrounded himself with those who are loyal to their own interests - aligned with his - over those of the nation. Leavitt is one such person who has no scruples about repeating the administrations lies.
That she should do so whilst overtly displaying a symbol of the Christian faith is highly offensive to true Christians. And that is one reason why Stewart's roast is entirely appropriate.
A second reason is that - given the purely selfish motives of Trump's administration, personal roasts are unfortunately more effective than attempts to engage with sensible policy discussion.
But most importantly, it is critical that we hold one another accountable for lying and that we do not allow for lies to become normalised.
