<<  quite rightly asking all members of congress whether ad hominem attacks are acceptable  >>
WHY IT MATTERS
It matters because it highlights the moral bankruptcy of the republican congressmen and women. And in the mid-terms, we should have an opportunity to tell them what WE think about that. Republican or Democrat, most of us can acknowledge that previous governments of both flavours are preferable to a government ruled by those who explicitly advocate for a lack of civility in the guise of ad hominem attacks. If we want this in our leaders, we are seeking a dark future indeed.
Crockett went on to test the vote of every republican representative which concluded - very sadly and weakly - that ad hominem attacks were perfectly acceptable in the committee. The very same people were then outraged when Crockett attacked the appearance of MJT in an analogous way. The episode - which really should be an embarrassment to the U.S. - highlighted
Despite the fact that some people will not be reasoned with - well done Raskin for calmly proposing that an apology is appropriate. In doing so, he - along with AOC and Crockett - highlighted a number of things:
1) Some of our leaders are not sufficiently mature to be able to apologise when they do something wrong.
2) Some of our leaders are unable to behave in a way that any civil society aims to teach primary school students.
3) … and this is the most important … Some of our so-called leaders are teaching us to choose party over morality.
